Storing and/or Sharing: the Negative in the Commercial Work of Josef Sudek

Hana Buddeus’ article, published in the journal Umění/Art, is one of the outcomes of the Sudek Project. Building on the study of the archive of Josef Sudek’s photographs of art works, the study focuses on the possibilities of using a photographic negative in art-historical research. The analysis of the photographs (surviving mostly in the form of negatives) references George Baker, who defined the negative as the true medium of photography. Apart from analyzing the “vintage prints,” the goal of the article consists mostly in analyzing the context of the photographs’ creation and distribution, where the criterion for selecting the individual images is based predominantly on their existing reproductions in period publications.
